About this experience

Embark on an unforgettable adventure with our Rainbow Mountain Peru Day Tour, one of the most breathtaking day trips from Cusco. Known as Vinicunca or the “Mountain of Seven Colors,” this natural wonder rises over 5,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes.

After an early hotel pickup, enjoy a scenic drive through Andean valleys and traditional villages where llamas and alpacas graze freely. The hike offers a rewarding challenge through red valleys and glacial streams until reaching the summit, where vibrant mineral layers create a surreal landscape.

You may also explore the Red Valley, another stunning natural formation nearby. Afterward, enjoy a traditional Andean lunch before returning to Cusco around 5:30 p.m. A perfect full-day adventure combining nature, culture, and Andean beauty.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Rainbow Mountain Peru Day Tour

The Rainbow Mountain Peru Day Tour begins in the early morning with pickup from your hotel in Cusco, usually between 4:00 and 4:30 AM. As you leave the city behind, the drive takes you through the peaceful Andean countryside, where the first light of dawn slowly reveals valleys, farmlands, and snow-capped peaks in the distance.

After about a two hour drive, youll arrive in the village of Cusipata. Here, a hearty buffet breakfast is served to give you the energy youll need for the day ahead. Over hot drinks and a simple Andean spread, your tour guide explains the details of the hike and offers tips for walking at high altitude.

From Cusipata, the journey continues for another hour until reaching the community of Chillihuani, the starting point of the trek. At an altitude of around 4,600 meters above sea level, the adventure truly begins. The hike to Rainbow Mountain takes about an hour and a half, following trails that gradually climb past grazing herds of llamas and alpacas, small streams of glacial water, and sweeping open plains. The crisp mountain air, combined with the rugged beauty of the highlands, makes every step both challenging and rewarding. Your guide enriches the experience by pointing out native flora and wildlife, while explaining the geological forces that created the colorful mineral layers of the mountain.

After a steady climb, youll reach the summit viewpoint of Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, at more than 5,000 meters above sea level. Here, youll have time to rest and take in the breathtaking views. The natural rainbow-colored slopes stretch across the horizon, with the majestic Ausangate glacier standing tall in the distance.

This is the perfect moment to take photos, enjoy the landscape, and simply absorb the magic of the Peruvian Andes. Those who wish can also walk a little further to explore the optional Red Valley, where deep crimson hills create an equally stunning and less crowded setting.

Once youve enjoyed the views, the return hike takes you back to Chillihuani, where your transport is waiting. From there, the group drives back to Cusipata to enjoy a well-deserved Andean lunch, a chance to relax and share stories of the mornings adventure.

By mid-afternoon, the return journey begins, with beautiful mountain scenery accompanying you back to Cusco. Around 5:00 to 5:30 P.M, youll arrive in the city and be dropped off in the historic center, marking the end of a full-day experience that combines nature, culture, and one of the most spectacular views in all of South America.

"Machu Picchu Peru Tours full day Sacred Valley was an amazing highlight of our trip to Peru. Do not miss it! Our driver Julio Cesar took us on time and safely to all amazing places and experiences beating the crowds. The guide, Erik, was the most passionated guide I've met. An incredible story teller, knowledgeable and giving us a superb experience. It was a real perfect day and an amazing almost private tour feeling like a super engaging history class. Don't think twice."

"The tour starts very early type 3-4 am, how good you can sleep on the way, we breakfast in a very good buffet and then depart for the mountain. Here the height is the problem, you can walk up but it requires a lot of condition, the good thing is that there are horses that you can pay and for 90 suns they leave you 15-20 minutes from the top. Wear layered clothes as you can warm up when climbing. We already walk down and the road is much easier. On horseback you go up in 40 minutes, you are on the mountain an hour to take pictures and the return is about 1 hour or so. In the end we still had lunch in the same very rich buffet!"

"Recommended! What a beautiful place!!! Most of us went up there on mules. Important to clarify if the person weighs more than 110 kg he will not be able to carry it and will have to walk up. It is still very expensive, to have proper footwear."

"I had the wonderful experience of coordinating a group trip with Carolina from this agency, and it was very positive. They were always willing to help and facilitate the trip. On the tours, we had the opportunity to meet Alex on the Sacred Valley tour. He is an excellent guide, very friendly and knowledgeable about all the sites, making the tour very entertaining. In Machu Picchu, we were guided by Edmar, an excellent, knowledgeable, and friendly guide."

"I loved that the travel agency made everything easy for me in Cusco. All I had to worry about was being on time for pickup and choosing what to eat at the buffet. The agency itself took care of everything. If I could highlight anything, it's the fact that I had a different guide on each tour, and they were all very kind and polite. They did their jobs well and knew how to explain the history of each place."
