Day 1:
Rainbow Mountain Peru Day Tour
Day 1: Rainbow Mountain Peru Day Tour
The Rainbow Mountain Peru Day Tour begins in the early morning with pickup from your hotel in Cusco, usually between 4:00 and 4:30 AM. As you leave the city behind, the drive takes you through the peaceful Andean countryside, where the first light of dawn slowly reveals valleys, farmlands, and snow-capped peaks in the distance.
After about a two hour drive, you’ll arrive in the village of Cusipata. Here, a hearty buffet breakfast is served to give you the energy you’ll need for the day ahead. Over hot drinks and a simple Andean spread, your tour guide explains the details of the hike and offers tips for walking at high altitude.
From Cusipata, the journey continues for another hour until reaching the community of Chillihuani, the starting point of the trek. At an altitude of around 4,600 meters above sea level, the adventure truly begins. The hike to Rainbow Mountain takes about an hour and a half, following trails that gradually climb past grazing herds of llamas and alpacas, small streams of glacial water, and sweeping open plains. The crisp mountain air, combined with the rugged beauty of the highlands, makes every step both challenging and rewarding. Your guide enriches the experience by pointing out native flora and wildlife, while explaining the geological forces that created the colorful mineral layers of the mountain.
After a steady climb, you’ll reach the summit viewpoint of Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, at more than 5,000 meters above sea level. Here, you’ll have time to rest and take in the breathtaking views. The natural rainbow-colored slopes stretch across the horizon, with the majestic Ausangate glacier standing tall in the distance.
This is the perfect moment to take photos, enjoy the landscape, and simply absorb the magic of the Peruvian Andes. Those who wish can also walk a little further to explore the optional Red Valley, where deep crimson hills create an equally stunning and less crowded setting.
Once you’ve enjoyed the views, the return hike takes you back to Chillihuani, where your transport is waiting. From there, the group drives back to Cusipata to enjoy a well-deserved Andean lunch, a chance to relax and share stories of the morning’s adventure.
By mid-afternoon, the return journey begins, with beautiful mountain scenery accompanying you back to Cusco. Around 5:00 to 5:30 P.M, you’ll arrive in the city and be dropped off in the historic center, marking the end of a full-day experience that combines nature, culture, and one of the most spectacular views in all of South America.
