Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour 1 Day
About this experience
We will explore one of the most stunning hidden treasures of the Andes, the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain. Known as the “twin sister” of Vinicunca, this destination displays a dazzling range of natural colors that paint the mountain slopes like a rainbow. Mineral-rich soils and ancient geological movements have shaped a surreal landscape unlike any other in the world.
Our adventure will start early in the morning as we travel through picturesque Andean villages, green valleys, and breathtaking highland scenery. Along the way, we will see herds of llamas and alpacas grazing freely under the bright blue sky. We will stop to enjoy a traditional breakfast prepared with local ingredients before reaching the trailhead near Palccoyo.
Once we begin the gentle hike, we will walk for about 45 minutes on an easy path with a gradual incline. The trail offers incredible views of the Ausangate Glacier, one of the most sacred peaks in the Andean world, standing at 6,384 meters above sea level. We will also discover the Stone Forest, a fascinating natural formation of rock pillars that resemble a landscape from another planet. Our bilingual guide will share stories about Andean cosmology, local wildlife, and traditional mountain life throughout the journey.
We will return to Cusco in the afternoon with our hearts full of wonder and our cameras full of memories. This tour combines culture, tranquility, and natural beauty — an experience that will remind us why the Andes are truly magical.

Day 1: Cusco, Checacupe bridges, Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain, Stone Forest (Ccacca Loma), Four Lagoons Circuit, and Ausangate Range.
We will begin our Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour early in the morning. At 05:30 hrs, we will meet at the Plaza de Armas in Cusco. A professional tourist vehicle will pick us up and we will travel through the Andean valleys. The sunrise over the mountains will accompany our journey toward the southern region of Cusco.
After a 2.5-hour drive, we will arrive at Checacupe, located 3,400 meters above sea level. This historic village preserves three bridges that show the evolution of Peruvian architecture: an Inca suspension bridge, a colonial bridge, and a republican bridge. We will take time to walk across them and admire the contrast between stone, wood, and rope. Our guide will share stories about the ancient Inca roads and their connection to the Sacred Valley.
We will continue the journey for 1.5 hours toward Palccoyo, located at 4,900 meters above sea level. Along the route, we will see Andean communities, herds of alpacas, and beautiful glaciers. Upon arrival, we will prepare for our gentle hike through the colorful mountain range. The air will feel crisp and fresh, and the colors of the earth will appear like a painted canvas.
The hike will last around 40 minutes. We will follow an easy trail surrounded by bright red, orange, and green hills. Along the way, we will observe eroded glaciers and the geological layers that form this rainbow-like landscape. Each step will bring us closer to the Stone Forest (Bosque de Piedras), known locally as Ccacca Loma. This area offers a breathtaking view of natural rock formations sculpted by wind and time.
From the viewpoint, we will also spot the Four Lagoons Circuit, including Acopia, Pomacanchis, Posposqo Cocha, and Misky Cocha. Their blue and turquoise waters contrast beautifully with the surrounding highlands. We will take our time to rest, take photos, and feel the spiritual energy of the Ausangate Range in the distance. Our guide will explain the significance of these landscapes in Andean mythology.
After exploring Palccoyo, we will return to our transport and drive to the town of Cusipata. Here, we will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch made with local ingredients. We will share this moment while surrounded by peaceful Andean scenery.
Finally, we will drive back to Cusco, arriving around 17:00 hrs at the Plaza Regocijo. This marks the end of our unforgettable experience in the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour.
